For the Student

For the Instructor

For the Student

Students want to study as efficiently as possible. The 4-step structure of mybiology allows students to identify what they don't know, select the appropriate learning activity to match their learning style, practice outside of lecture, test their understanding before moving on to the next topic, and finally extend their knowledge with case studies and special topic material.

The content for every chapter follows an effective 4-step learning path:

Focus your Effort
uses a pre-test as a roadmap to identify your students' study needs. In addition to question-specific feedback on wrong answers of the pre-test, students can link to the exact section of the eBook or go to an activity to learn the material. View a personalized study plan.

Direct Your Learning
utilizes the resources that support the various learning styles of your students, from MP3 Tutors for auditory learners to BioFlix™ and Discovery Channel videos for visual learners, to the eBook for those who prefer to read.

Test Yourself
offers an Activity Quiz on the interactive activity in each chapter and a Chapter Quiz for students to check their understanding and prepare them for exams.

Extend Your Knowledge
allows students to go beyond the chapter material by exploring case studies in the process of science and viewing Discovery Channel videos and other tools.

mybiology offers support on the toughest topics in biology

BioFlix™ are interactive self-paced tutorials that help students master the toughest topics in biology such as cellular respiration, mitosis and meiosis. Students can prepare for exams by completing the tutorial, printing a personal review sheet, and taking a quiz.

Discovery Channel videos are brief 3-5 minute video clips covering topics from fighting cancer to antibiotic resistance and introduced species.

eBook
Premium mybiology websites are available with an eBook that gives students access to the text wherever they have access to the internet. The eBook includes the full text including art and figures that can be enlarged for better viewing. Within the eBook students are also able to pop-up definitions and terms to help with vocabulary and the reading of the material. Students can also take notes in the eBook using the annotation feature at the top of each page.

The Belk / Borden Maier series websites will include myeBook:
myeBook is integrated within selected mybiology sites. Students are often directed to appropriate sections of myeBook when they need extra help, look for this icon.

The integration of myeBook within mybiology gives students easy access to the text when and wherever they have access to the Internet. myeBook pages look exactly like the printed text, offering powerful new functionality for students and instructors. Users can create notes, highlight text in different colors, create book marks, zoom, click hyperlinked words and phrases to view definitions, view in single-page or two-page view. myeBook also links students to associated media files, enabling them to view an animation as they read the text.

Instructors can share their notes and highlights with students and can also hide chapters that they do not want their students to read. myeBook offers a full-text search and the ability to save and export notes.

mybiology offers assessment and activities

Cumulative Test is an assessment tool that allows you to create your own quizzes with questions covering multiple chapters to prepare for mid-terms and final exams. Access to this feature is found in the side navigation bar inside of every mybiology premium website.

GraphIt! is a series of 11 interactive graphing activities that allow students to manipulate real data while learning the art of graphing.

The Campbell series websites will include the following media tools:

MP3 Tutor Sessions are portable audio tutorials, as in virtual private office hours with author Eric Simon, that allow students to study anytime, anywhere. The audio tutorials focus on either tough topics or tough terms depending on the topic. Each MP3 tutorial includes a quiz to check student comprehension.

You Decide activities help students learn how to interpret research data and formulate conclusions by examining topics such as low-fat vs. low-carb diets, global warming, and the risks of second-hand smoke.

For the Instructor

Maximize your tools

All the assets in mybiology are available for download for instructors from the Instructor Home section of the book's website. Here's how to maximize our assets in your class:

  1. Show a BioFlix animation in lecture. BioFlix™ animations invigorate classroom lectures with effective, 3-minute "movie quality" 3D graphics that capture students' attention. Using the BioFlix™ animations, professors can bring essential, difficult-to-teach biological concepts to life during lectures.
  2. Assign students to review the animation on their own time, do the tutorial, and take the quiz.
  3. Assess their participation through the gradebook.

AND/OR

  1. Show a Discovery Channel video in lecture. Discovery Channel Video Clips cover a wide range of biological topics and show students how science is connected to their lives.
  2. Assign students to review the video on their own time and take the quiz available on mybiology.com.
  3. Assess their participation through the gradebook.

AND/OR

  1. Show Activity from your book's website in lecture.
  2. Assign students the Activity Quiz and/or Chapter Quiz available on mybiology. The Activity Quiz tests knowledge of the content in the Activity included in each section of mybiology. The Chapter Quiz tests knowledge on the content in the textbook chapter.
  3. Assess their participation through the gradebook.

How instructors are incorporating BioFlix™ into their course:

  • Use the PowerPoint® slides with labeled images in lecture to slowly guide your students through the processes.
  • Start class with a movie! Have students watch the BioFlix™ video with narration at the beginning of class, then enhance the information with your lecture and go back before the class ends to watch the video again - this time without narration, and ask your class to explain what is happening. Use the pause feature on your video player to stop and highlight different aspects of the process.
  • Watch the BioFlix™ video in lecture and assign your students to watch it on their own and complete the tutorial and the quiz.
  • Have your students print out the eStudy Sheet located on the book's website and fill it out while watching the BioFlix™ videos. Then have them turn it in at the next class for homework.
  • Spruce up your lectures by incorporating the BioFlix™ animations into your own PowerPoint® presentations!

How are you using these amazing BioFlix? Tell us! Please submit your suggestions to our Biology mailbox at bc.biology@aw.com.
